About.

Helping to give the public confidence in the sector

The IFSO team supports funeral directors in delivering the highest possible operational standards

IFSO provides oversight of UK funeral homes that are members of the NAFD, helping to provide assurance to the public that the funeral director they have chosen is operating to high standards. We inspect NAFD member funeral homes against the requirements of the Funeral Director Code, ensuring they comply with its requirements – which includes meeting the requirements of all external regulators such as the Competition and Markets Authority and Financial Conduct Authority) and strive to continuously improve the way they work.

Understanding our scope

IFSO provides oversight of the operational standards of NAFD members

In the absence of statutory regulation, IFSO was launched in 2022 to provide the potential to create an industry wide oversight body for the funeral sector. Due to a variety of changes in the external environment, IFSO only provides oversight for NAFD members (circa 4,000 UK funeral homes), and it is not backed by any statutory powers, so operates purely through the consent and commitment of NAFD members to achieve high standards. In Scotland, the situation is different, as the Scottish Government’s Funeral Director Code of Practice will come into force in March 2025, making it the first country in the UK to regulate operational standards in the funeral sector.
